'Sounds' asked me to go to Paris to photograph Robert Smith without the rest of the band. We decided between us to do something a little different, surreal almost. I had a roll of reflective card, which I had trekked all over Paris with under my arm. I photographed him looking through it, looking moody and mysterious. Robert Smith really liked these pictures. They suited him; his 'oddness' and his taste for the avant garde. He later said in an interview that it was his "best photo shoot for a magazine ever".
